B. West Virginia Film Office Updates & News

1. Hot Topic of the Month.  The Film Office receives numerous inquiries from student filmmakers and emerging filmmakers about how to "get in the biz". A valuable resource for students — and instructors —is the Student Filmmaker Magazine and associated website, www.studentfilmmakers.com. In fact, even for the professional filmmaker, some of the information available on this website may prove useful.

2. Community / Industry Relations / Office Development.  The Film Office was asked to give a presentation to 7th and 8th graders of Mason, Lincoln, and Wayne Counties enrolled in the Heart of Appalachia Educational Talent Search Program at Marshall University during its June 8-10 career camp. The presentation focused on careers in the filming industry that are different than the usual well-known positions of director, editor, etc. Helpful materials/resources were also distributed to the students. For more information about the program, visit www.marshall.edu/em/trio/talentsearch.

3. Miscellaneous News.  The Premiere Committee for the Warner Bros. film "We Are Marshall" is hard at work planning for a gala event like no other the state has ever seen. The tentative date of the state premiere is October 25 or 26 in Huntington, but that could easily change even as close to a few weeks before the event. The committee is working in conjunction with Warner Bros. and must abide by numerous policies for such a special affair. Stay tuned for additional information from the Film Office and Marshall University. It is worth noting that in April, Marshall University released a report, "The Economic Impact of Marshall University" (prepared by MU's Center for Business and Economic Research), which includes a brief section about the film and direct spending of Warner Bros. while filming in Huntington. It is estimated that nearly $3 million was spent directly during the movie’s production, with an additional $250,000 spent by the cast and crew for food and entertainment. The report concludes that the direct spending of $3.25 million created additional economic benefits to Huntington and the surrounding area resulting in total spending in excess of $4.6 million. To read the report, visit www.marshall.edu/cber/research/MU_Impact_Study_final.pdf.

4. West Virginia on a Screen Near You.

[this section intentionally left blank for this edition — an Addendum will be sent later this week]

5. West Virginians in the News – "Outside the Border".

(a) For Jennifer Garner fans, start saving for the November 21 release of the ALIAS mega-set DVD. Buena Vista is issuing a limited edition of 40,000 copies that is packaged in a box that looks like a Rambaldi artifact and will include 29 discs. The discs include every episode of the series as well as a bonus disc hidden inside a secret compartment that will include many extras, including interviews with the cast and Garner's first ever interview. The set will also include a hardcover book. All this for $200.

(b) Speaking of Jennifer Garner, her next appearance on the big screen will be in Susannah Grant's "Catch and Release" (filmed in Canada and Colorado with co-stars Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis, Kevin Smith) tentatively scheduled for release in January 2007. Garner's voice talent is used for the character Susy in the December release of "Charlotte's Web" (other voice talent includes Robert Redford, Oprah, Julia Roberts, and numerous others). And Garner is currently in production for Peter Berg's "The Kingdom" (filming in Arizona and Los Angeles with co-stars Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, Jason Bateman) tentatively scheduled for release in April 2007.

6. Locations Scouting.  Since the last Email Blast, numerous locations have been scouted and/or considered across the state for productions — some based on client requests and some specifically to capture images of regions not yet in the Film Office Locations Library. Counties scouted and/or considered include Berkeley, Braxton, Brooke, Cabell, Fayette, Greenbrier, Hancock, Harrison, Jefferson, Lewis, Marshall, Mason, Nicholas, Ohio, Pocahontas, Preston, Randolph, Tucker, Upshur, Webster, Wetzel, Wood.
